Arts for Social Justice School Tour

RETURNING AUGUST 2024:

August 28 - September 13, 2024

Breaking Through by Leo Cortez

based on the book by Francisco Jiménez

SCU•Presents Arts for Social Justice produces and presents a series of 50-minute plays that address a social justice issue that is pertinent to our local community.

One of the most divisive issues in our country today is immigration. This discussion is taking place in our nation, but in California, it is more than just a discussion, it is an issue that touches us personally through our students and in our community. In discussing this issue, migrants are rarely humanized and it is our responsibility to address this issue in accordance with our core values of education individuals through conscience and compassion.

SCU•Presents Arts for Social Justice announces the school tour of the play Breaking Through a 50-minute play adapted from the book by Francisco Jiménez. As a sequel to his first book, The Circuit, this play examines Francisco’s life growing up as a migrant child in California. It is a story of perseverance, family, and the importance of higher education.

Recommended: Grades 3 and up.

Arts: A Catalyst for Change

Art has always played a role in social justice education, community building, and social activism/social movements. It provides a universal language that gives voice to individuals and communities and is accessible across social boundaries.

The processes by which people create and engage with art equip them to understand and challenge social injustices. Art can also be a catalyst to engage a community to take action around a social issue and motivate individuals to promote social change.
